Sizing Information

Soprano -Soprano is the smallest of the four ukulele body sizes and is the traditional ukulele size.  The Honu Soprano is perfect for kids learning ukulele or for adults who prefer the brighter tone of a traditional ukulele.

Concert -Concert ukuleles are currently the most popular ukulele body size worldwide.  Bigger than a soprano but smaller than a tenor, a concert uke is the perfect middle ground for most players.  This size is suitable for all ages, though small children may be better suited to a soprano.

Tenor -Tenor ukuleles are exploding in popularity thanks to the full, deep sound produced by their larger body size.  Bigger than the concert, the tenor is great for teenagers and adults that are looking for the most volume from their ukulele and extra space for their fingers on the fretboard.

Baritone -As the name suggests, a baritone ukulele is the largest and deepest sounding of all of the ukulele sizes.  Usually tuned like the highest four strings of a guitar (DGBE), rather than the GCEA tuning found on most ukes, a baritone is great if you have a background in guitar because you won't have to learn any new chord shapes.  They are also very fun if you are a ukulele player looking to experiment with a different tone.

This Kohala deluxe baritone is a beautiful instrument with a very warm and pleasing timbre. I first became interested in Honolua ukuleles because a friend had one that she had gotten from the sale section, and recommended I take a look.

I am pleased with this purchase in many ways. Aesthetically this is a beautiful piece, which for me always adds to the enjoyment of playing an instrument. The acacia wood has a very striking appearance with the contrasting colours of grain. The imitation abalone inlay is a nice touch. On close inspection it's obviously a simulation out of resin or something like that, but still looks quite nice. The gold tone tuning pegs are pretty, but do need oiling. The bone-look nuts on the pegs are pretty too, but feel cheap in that I can feel the seam of the plastic around the edges. I may find that down a bit.
It has a soft, guitar like sound without the brassiness of full steel strings, nor the tinny, banjo-like sound that a lot of ukuleles have.
On the downside, being that it is a B stock there is a noticeable separation in the top seam, which I was aware of. The description on the website says it has cosmetic or functional flaws. I contacted Dave before purchasing and asked him about it. He assured me verbally that there was nothing functionally wrong with it. This turned out to be only partially accurate. When the instrument arrived the intonation was badly out, so I took it to my local guitar shop. The man who adjusted it filed down the bridge and nut considerably, and adjusted the tension rod in the neck. But he said he was not able to get the action as low as other baritone ukes because if he adjusted the tension rod anymore it would risk fully separating the seam. Nevertheless, he commented on the beautiful tone. But I do find that the e string goes way out of tune after just a few minutes. All in all, it's very playable and fun! I played guitar 20 years ago, and this is much easier with only 4 strings. When my playing is more presentable I may consider upgrading to the same model but with a built-in pickup.
Please note, in case this is important to you. Although this is a Canadian company, these are not Canadian made. They are made in China, hence the affordability.

    Lovely instrument

As a beginner player, I'm not familiar with the nuances of ukulele construction, but I thought it was a great deal to buy a B-stock Kohala as my first uke. I made the right call! It's a beautiful instrument and it sounds lovely. Every time I pick it up to practice it feels comfortable and easy. The split seam is so slight that it's barely noticeable.

I also had no idea what a baritone ukulele was until I took the Meet your Match Quiz. When the quiz recommended the baritone size becaues it was most similar to a guitar, I was delighted (I have previous experience playing guitar). My purchasing decision became so easy thanks to the quiz.

Dave is also a great business owner. He answered my email questions promptly and when I told him I was left-handed, he restrung the ukulele and added a strap pin on the right side before he shipped it.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and happy that I was able to support a Canadian business.

I ordered b stock. The pictures they used to show the small crack were very detailed and accurate. I can barely see the crack and it does not effect the sound at all. It sounds beautiful ❤️❤️❤️. I love my ukulele from them. Only took 3 days for it to come. Very impressed with the company and website. I had a question and they answered it within a few hours. Great customer service. Made me feel like I'm part of a family almost. Highly recommend shopping there. If the b stock ukulele sounds this good I can only imagine how wonderful the pristine ones sound. 2 👍👍
